DIRECT ACTION
Between West and Franklin streets on Eagle Street in Greenpoint Brooklyn, was for years a popular end of the road dumping site for everything imaginable. When artists and musicians began to occupy the warehouses on this block in 1996, the dumping continued with giant loads of concrete, gallons and gallons of waste oil and other materials in 5 gallon drums, household debris, construction debris, and animals both dead and alive.
After witnessing this from my living space on the block for years, I chose to address the situation by planting a small garden complete with a functioning compost pile. This project drastically reduced the amount of trash dumped here and seemingly raised the level of respect on this plot for the entire neighborhood.
